Inside the AMA Alliance: Educate. Advocate. Connect. And Why It Matters for Physician Families

Inside the AMA Alliance: Educate. Advocate. Connect.
What exactly does the AMA Alliance offer physician families today?
Some families have been part of the Alliance for decades. Others may recognize the name but know little about what the organization does now. And many physician spouses and partners—particularly those newer to life in medicine—may not yet realize this community is available to them.
That's one reason I wanted to create this episode.
I brought together leaders from across the American Medical Association Alliance (AMA Alliance) for one conversation told through several voices, centered around three core values:
Educate. Advocate. Connect.
Educate
Physician families need resources that reflect the realities of their lives.

Sheridan Sheffield, Director of Communications, shares how Physician Family Magazine and Alliance communications provide information created specifically for medical families.

Lori Boies, PhD, Director of Events and Chair of the Physician Family Experience Survey writing committee, takes us inside the Physician Family Experience Survey and explains how we're using what families tell us to shape programming, including the Physician Family Wellness Series.

Ann Sanford, Chair of the Alliance Health Education Initiative (AHEI), shares where education and grants help members create healthier communities.

And as Director of Programs, I share some of what we're building next—including an AMA Alliance Self-Care Toolkit designed to look at well-being far beyond exercise, nutrition, or the proverbial bubble bath.
Advocate

Jenny Shepherd, Director of Advocacy and Legislation, calls herself an “accidental advocate,” which may be one of my favorite descriptions in this episode.
You don't have to love politics. You don't have to understand every policy issue. And you don't need to start by walking into a legislator's office.
Your lived experience matters.
Physician families see firsthand how healthcare policy, burnout, administrative burden, access to care, and workforce challenges affect not only doctors, but spouses, children, patients, and communities.
That perspective belongs in the conversation.
Connect
And then there is the word we heard again and again: community.

Brian Case, Director of Membership, speaks about the value of simply having people who understand your situation.

AMA Alliance President, Dinah Goldenberg, describes the organization as a warm and welcoming community and shares her vision for an Alliance that continues evolving alongside today's physician families.
That may ultimately be what ties this entire episode together.
Medicine changes. Families change. The challenges of MedLife change.
But the need to feel understood, connected, informed, and heard remains.
Whether you've belonged to the Alliance for decades or are just discovering it, I hope this episode gives you a clearer picture of what the AMA Alliance is working to accomplish—and why its work matters for physician families.
